Tristesse , a setting by Théophile Gautier, was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1873 and published in 1876. It is the second song of his op.6, trois Mélodies.

Tristesse is the second song of Fauré’s opus 6, trois mélodies. It was written by the composer, aged 28 in 1873. He had been appointed organist of the Parisian Saint-Sulpice church a year earlier and composed music in his spare time. During this period, he spent a lot of time at the musical gatherings organized by Saint-Saens, meeting many of the preeminent composers of his time.
Tristesse, is with no doubt, the work of a young composer who has not yet mastered his composition style. Nonetheless, the melody at the vocal line is compelling and enchanting, bringing us back to the popular Parisian atmosphere of the time. The 6/8 bar signature is made to sound waltz-like with accents on the first crotchets of each beat. It seems unlike Fauré to treat French prosody with carelessness so perhaps the accent on the first syllable of “Avril” (when the strong inflection should be on the second one) was written in to emphasize this general atmosphere of Parisian nonchalance.
