Trennung , a setting of a traditionnal swabian song was composed by Johannes Brahms in 1884 and published in 1885. It is the sixth and final song of Brahm’s Sechs Lieder, op.97.

Op.97 was published by Brahms in 1886. In his fifties, he was now a worldwide famous composer appraised in Cambridge but even more so in Vienna where he had settled twenty years earlier. Op.97 is notably short, all the songs of the cycle are quiet brief. As often with Brahms’s, the unity of the song cycle is to be found in the music as the texts are quite assorted: Christian Reinhold Köstlin (N.1 and N.2), Willibald Alexis (N.3), Klaus Groth (N .5) an traditionnal songs (N.4 and N.6). Brahms shows a very different approach to Schumann’s or Schubert’s song cycles where texts were all chosen among the same collection of poems.

Trennung is the sixth and final song of the cycle. Brahms selected it (as well of N.4, Dort in den Weiden steht ein Haus) from the Kretzschmer-Zuccalmaglio folksong collection. Brahms would later arrange those same songs, keeping the traditional melodies in his large collection of folksong arrangements published in 1894. Brahms was later to discover some of the folksongs were, in fact, a creation of Zuccalmoglio and had nothing of traditional (it’s the case of N.4)! Our song (Trennung), however, was recognized as an original Swabian folk song by many contemporaries of Brahms. Do pay special attention to the language as this is German dialect not Hochdeutsch!

Trennung is a delicate and loving projection. The narrator imagines expressing his love to his beloved and not being loved in return. The music is tainted with delicate melancholy, emphasized by the sensual suspensions on strong beats of the bar. The song is strophic, respecting the simplicity of this Swabian folksong.
