Presentation

Tornami a vagheggiar, a setting by Riccardo Broschi, was composed by George Frideric Händel in 1735 and premiered the same year. This aria takes place in Act I of Alcina.

In 1735, year where Alcina was first premiered, Handel, aged 55 is an extremely famous composer in England. Born in Halle (today situated in Germany), he had spent, in his mid-twenties, several years in Italy, learning how to master Italian opera. He chose to settle in London around 1711 and since then, composed Italian operas for the English public in great number: In 1735, year where Alcina was composed, Handel also wrote no less than Ariodante!

Act I of the opera opens on Bradamante, a young girl disguised as her brother Ricciardo and Melisso, her formal tutor. Armed with a magic ring, they have decided to deliver the prisoners of the island from Alcina’s spell, especially Ruggiero, betrothed to Bradamande. They are welcomed by Morgana, sister of Alcina. She falls instantly in love with “Ricciardo” even though she is engaged to Oronte.

Scene 2 opens on Alcina in her palace. She warmly welcomes the arrival of Bradamande and Melisso and reveals she now loves Ruggiero. She asks Ruggiero to show the palace to her guests. As she leaves, Oberto arrives and pleads for help as he is trying to find his father. Finally left alone with Ruggiero, Bradamante reminds him he is being unfaithful but he ignores her words and reveals his love for Alcina. Oronte, who has just learnt from Morgana about her new feelings for “Ricciardo” wants to fight him in return but Morgana intercedes and breaks up with him.

Oronte then meets Ruggiero and decides to have revenge on Alcina. He lets Ruggiero know Alcina is in love with “Ricciardo”. Alcina denies being in love with anyone else when she and Ruggiero meet. She leaves and Bradamante reveals her real identity to Ruggiero. Ruggiero refuses to believe her and imagines instead that “Ricciardo” is hiding his feelings of love for Alcina. Morgana appears to beg “Ricciardo” to escape: Alcina intends on transforming him into a wild animal. “Ricciardo” refuses to flee and asks Morgana to let Alcina know he is in love with someone else than herself. Morgana understands “Ricciardo” loves her in return and expresses her immense joy in her aria: Tornami a vagheggiar.
