Presentation

Ständchen , a setting by Ludwig Rellstab , was composed by Franz Schubert in 1828 and published a few months after his death, in 1829. It is the fourth song of Schwanengesang, D.957.

Ständchen is part of a collection of songs published after Schubert’s’ death, named by his first publisher, Tobias Haslinger, Schwanengesang. Schubert, aged 31 at the time of the composition, is dying from syphilis and feels drawn to what the poems express: solitude, suffering, memories of long gone happiness but also glimpses of hope and intense loving words. Unknown in Vienna where he is living at the time, extremely lonely and unsuccessful, Schubert seems to poor into his work every longing of his soul. It is unusual for Schubert to set the texts of several poets into one cycle: the works of Ludwig Rellstab, Heinrich Heine and Johann Gabriel Seidl all hold a part in Schwanengesang. The song cycle is often said to be Schubert’s testimony to the world as it contains the last Lied he was ever to write: Taubenpost.

Ständchen is the fourth lied of Schwanengesang. Schubert decided to set a series of poems written by Ludwig Rellstab to honor Beethoven’s memory (the transcriptor of Beethoven, Anton Schindler, had handed Schubert those poems). It is probably one of the most famous serenades ever written. The melody, astonishing in its apparent simplicity, arches delicately to express sweet melancholy and loving words. The harmonies, as often in Schubert, reflect the powerful emotions expressed by the singer. The whole lied transpires beauty and grace and is considered by many, the quintessence of Schubert’s genius.
