Selve amiche was composed by Antonio Caldara and premiered in 1710 (A minor). This aria takes place in the first act of his opera, La costanza in amor vince l’inganno.

If the vocal works of Caldara are rarely performed today, he is deemed to be one of the most influential Italian composer of the 17th century. When Caldara’s opera, La costanza in amor vince l’inganno, is premiered in 1710, for the theater of Macerata, the composer is in his forties. He has moved back to Italy and is now maestro di cappella to Francesco Maria Marescotti Ruspoli, 1st Prince of Cerveteri. If the opera is rarely staged today, two of its arias became famous after their publication in the Arie Antiche collection, printed in the late 19th century.

Selve amiche opens act I of La Costanza in amor vince l’inganno. It is sang by Silvia, a young woman, troubled by matters of love. At the time, woman in Italy, were not allowed to sing on public stages, which meant the role had to be performed by a castrati. Interestingly, Caldara, rewrote an opera based on the same plot, two years later, called Opera pastorale. It was composed, this time, for a private performance in Rome. Because the performance was private, women could sing on stage, so this time, Caldara chose to write the role of Silvia, for a woman’s voice.
