Range Quando men vo

Quando men vo, a setting by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, was composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1895 (E Major) and premiered the year after. This aria is part of Act II of his opera, La Bohème.

Many consider la Bohème as Puccini’s first major opera work. Aged 38, his composition technic has matured and his collaboration with the librettists, Illica and Giacosa (after their first opera together, Manon Lescault) reaches symbiosis. Based on a book by Henry Muger “la vie de bohème”, Puccini often evoked his own experiences as a poor art student to relate with his characters. If, Tosca, his next opera premiered in 1900, is unarguably his first verismo opera, La Bohème premises in many ways this evolution with throughout composed music, realistic language and the depiction of poverty and its consequences.

Act I opens on Rodolfo’s small cold room where his friends progressively all meet up (Marcello the painter, Colline the philosopher, Schaunard the musician). Schaunard has just earned some money and invites them to celebrate his good fortune at the restaurant. They are interrupted by Rodolfo’s landlord who has come to collect the rent. They bribe him into telling them he has a wife and a mistress and mimic moral disgust before throwing him out without paying the rent.
They all go out to celebrate except for Rodolfo who wants to finish an article before. He is disturbed by a knock: Mimi, a neighbor, asks him for fire as her candle has blown up and she is left with no matches. As she is unwell, Rodolfo seats her and hands her a glass of wine. She thanks him and wants to leave, but realizes she has lost her key. All their candles blow out and they look for the key stumbling in the dark. Rodolfo soon finds it but hides it and taking her cold hand, tells her more about his life. She also confides in him and they decide to join the others for dinner.

Act II opens on the group of friends joyfully heading to the café Momus. As they are having dinner, Musetta, arrives with her actual rich lover, Alcindoro. She notices Marcello, an ex-lover and decides to attract his attention by singing her aria: Quando me’n vo.
