Pleurez, pleurez mes yeux! , a setting by Louis Gallet and Edouard Blau, was composed by Jules Massenet in 1885 (B minor) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of Act III of the opera, Le Cid.

Premiered in 1885, the Cid, an opera composed by Massenet, one of the most recognized French composers of his time, was immensely successful. After 1919, it ceased to be performed, except for the ballet suite of different Spanish dances figuring in act II.
The only part of the opera to still be frequently sung today is Pleurez mes yeux, an aria sung by Chimène in act III.

Act I opens on the news that Rodrigue has been named knight of the King despite his young age. The Comte, father of Chimène is hoping to be given the title of governor of the Infant. He approves of Rodrigue and hopes to see him become his daughter’s future husband. The Infante reveals to Chimène her love for Rodrigue. Sadly for her, his lower social rank forbids her to marry him. In the second tableau, Rodrigue promises to remain faithful to Saint Jacques of Compostelle. The king offers his father, Don Diègue, the title of governor of the Infant. The Comte is infuriated and refuses to accepts Don Diègue’s proposal to unit their two children, Rodrigue and Chimène. He insults Don Diègue and attacks him. Don Diègue, humiliated, asks his son to avenge him. Rodrigue is left desperate when he leans he must seek vengeance against the father of his beloved Chimène.

Act II opens on Rodrigue hesitating on which decision to take. He decides his attachment must go to his father in the first place and not to Chimène. He enters in a duel against the Comte and kills him. When Chimène learns the new, she faints with sadness.
She later goes to the King to seek justice and have Rodrigue condemned. His father, Don Diègue, asks to be condemned in his place as he is responsible for the duel. The news that war is about to commence interrupts the discussion: Rodrigue has to head to war.

Act III opens on Chimène expressing all her pain and sorrow in her aria: Pleurez mes yeux.
