Range Ombra mai fiu

Ombra mai fiu, a setting by Silvio Stampiglia, was composed by George Frideric Händel in 1737 and premiered in 1738. This aria takes place in Act I of Serse.

Handel had been living in England for almost three decades when he composed Serse in 1738. It is one of his last Italian opera as from 1741 on, he would compose only English ones. The librettist is unidentified but we know his work was an adaptation of a libretto by Silvio Stampiglia, Silvio’s libretto being inspired by the one of Nicolo Minato. It is set in the Persian Empire during the reign of the Emperor Xerxès the First, five centuries before Jesus Christ. Serse is often considered one of Handel’s best operas: it mixes passion with laughter and satire, a novelty that distinguished it from the opera seria requirements of the time.

The opera opens on an aria sung by King Serse, written at first for a castrati, sung nowadays by women or countertenors: Ombra mai fiu. Serse expresses his love for his favorite tree when he sees Romilda and decides to marry her. This famous melody is often performed for solo orchestra and is known as the Largo of Handel.
