Linda di Chamounix was composed by Donizetti in 1842 at the height of his maturity and fame. It had been commissioned for the royal court of Vienna. The same year, he revised the opera slightly for a series of performances in Paris.
Act I opens on a village called Chamounix, where preparations are underway to send many young people to Paris where they will be able to find work. Antonio is worrying as the lease of his farm is close to expiring and it has not been renewed. The Marquis promises to plead his case to his sister, Antonio’s landowner. He asks to see Antonio’s daughter, Linda, but he is told she is not home. He offers to house her at the castle and pay for her education.
In the next scene Linda arrives late for her daily meeting with her beloved Carlo, a young painter. She cannot find him and expresses all her love when she sees the posies he has left for her in her aria: O luce di quest’anima.
