Range Mon cœur s'ouvre à ta voix

Mon cœur s’ouvre à ta voix, a setting by Ferdinand Lemaire, was composed by Camille Saint-Saëns between 1867 and 1876 (Db Major) and premiered in 1877. This aria is part of Act II of his opera, Samson et Dalilah.

Saint-Saëns discovered baroque oratorios with fascination around the mid nineteenth century. He intended to write his own oratorio on the biblical theme of Samson and Dalilah when his librettist, Ferdinand Lemaire, convinced him to set it, instead, as an opera. The originality of the subject did not meet much interest, and no opera house in France accepted to have it premiered in 1876. Franz Liszt was instrumental on convincing the opera of Weimar to have it set in 1877. Today, it remains the only opera by Saint-Saëns to be frequently performed.

Act I opens on Samson attempting to awake the faith of a group of Hebrews. Abimelech arrives and makes fun of them. He praises his God, Dagon. Samson answers back and Abimelech outraged, throws himself at him even if Samson is unarmed. Samson manages to kill him. The High priest of Dagon is furious to learn of Samson’s strength and of the destruction of the harvest by the Hebrews. He plots to defeat Samson with the help of Delilah’s beauty.
In the next scene Dalilah meets Samson and tries to seduce him by inviting him to her home in the valley. An older Hebrew warns him of the danger Delilah represents for him but he seems unable to resist her charms.

Act II opens on Delilah rejoicing of her success in charming Samson. The high priest arrives and asks her to help him capture Samson. She accepts as she hates the Hebrews and want to be faithful to her God, Dagon. When she meets Samson, she swears to be his, if he wants. She pleads for him to respond favorably to her love in her aria: mon Coeur s’ouvre à ta voix.
