Mein Herr Marquis, a setting by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée, was composed by Johann Strauss and premiered in 1874. This aria takes place in act II of Strauss’ opera, die Fledermaus.

Die Fledermaus, premiered in 1873 in Vienna, was set on a French libretto by Meilhac and Halevy translated into German by Karl Haffner and Richard Genée, the original libretto being inspired by a German play, Das Gefängnis by Julius Roderich Benedix! It was immediately successful and is still performed on a regular basis at der Theater an der Wien. The operetta’s second act allows a lot of freedom production wise, with addition danses, comedies, music that has often been added. In the role of Gabriel von Eisenstein was, at first, intended for a tenor, it is mostly baritones that perform it nowadays.

Act I opens on Gabriel von Eisenstein, furious to have been sentenced 8 days in prison for insulting an official. Adele, his maid, pretends her aunt is ill in order to get a night off. She intends on going to a ball at Prince Orlofsky’s house, although she has not been invited. Falke, a friend of Eisenstein arrives and invites him to that same ball. Falke plans on avenging himself of a practical joke Eisenstein did to him a few years earlier. Einsenstein accepts the proposition but does not tell the truth to his wife and maid. He says, instead he is heading to prison.
Later in the evening Rosalinde is spending time with her lover, Alfred, when the governor of the prison arrives to take Gabriel von Eisenstein to jail. To not compromise Rosalinde, Alfred accepts to be taken to prison as her husband, Gabriel.

In Act II, Falke reveals that inviting Adele and Rosalinde, in disguise to the ball, is part of his revenge plan against Gabriel von Eisenstein. Rosalinde arrives pretending to be a Hungarian countess and Adele, dressed in her mistress’s dress, pretends to be an actress.
As Einsenstein arrives, he is introduced to Adele and confused by her resemblance with his maid. Adèle tells him off in her aria: Mein Herr Marquis.
