Range Les berceaux

Les berceaux , a setting by Sully Prudhomme, was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1879 and published in 1882. It is the first song of his op.23, trois Mélodies.

Fauré wrote it during a difficult period of his life: his engagement to Marianne Viardot had been broken off a year earlier much to his despair and he was also suffering to see his music unvalued and unappreciated.
Les berceaux, setting a poem by Sully-Prudhomme, opens on the depiction of large ships rocked by the ocean as cradles held by women. The piano accompaniment seems to describe this constant movement with its quietening arpeggios at the bass line. As the voice appears, the vocal line flows over the bar, emphasizing this impression of motionless movement. But, all is broken into a climax of despair (bar 19) as farewells must be said, separating cradles and men.
