Presentation

Le jour sous le soleil béni, a setting by Georges Hartmann, was composed by André Messager (Db Major) and premiered in 1893. This aria is part of Act III of his opera, Madame Chrysanthème.

Madame Chrysanthème, premiered in 1893 was never the most successful of Messager’s opera. The libretto, written by Georges Hartmann and Alexandre André was inspired by Madame Chrysanthème, a semi-autobiographic novel by Pierre Loti. It is interesting to compare the opera with Madame Butterfly, an opera by Puccini inspired by the same novel of Pierre Loti. In Messager’s version, Pierre never masters Madame Chrysanthème and the love affair is made more genuine and light with the focus on the conflict between the two sailors. Puccini choses to focus on the relation between the geisha and the French man, insisting on his domination and possessiveness. The intensity of the relationship and the focus on the internal emotions of Madame Butterfly (Madame Chrysanthème in Messager’s version) shifts the story towards something more dramatic and intense.

The opera opens on Pierre and Yves, two French officers arriving at Nagasaki (Japan) and dreaming of an exotic love affair. When Pierre meets the geishas, he immediately falls in love with one. He contracts a Japanese marriage with her and learns she is called Chrysanthème.

Act II is set in the garden of Chrysanthème where the two spouses are asleep. Pierre declares his love to his wife but she shies away. Friends arrive and they all celebrate the marriage. Act III opens on a festival where Chrysanthème sings a song: Le jour sous le soleil béni.
