Range Io son quel gelsomino

Io son quel gelsomino , a setting by Domenico Lalli, was composed by Antonio Vivaldi in 1715 (Bb Major) and premiered in 1716. It is part of the first act of Vivaldi’s opera, Arsilda, Regina di Ponto.

Premiered in 1716, Arsilda, regina di Ponto is the Vivaldi’s fourth opera. At the time, the composer, aged 38, is already famous for his music throughout Europe. This opera, setting a libretto written by Domenico Lalli, is one of the earliest collaborations between the two men. Arsilda bares the characteristics of many operas of these years, simple recitatives quickly paced, short non-virtuosic arias… Although the opera met great success at the time, it is really performed today, apart from a few arias, sung on their own.

Antipatra, widowed Queen of Cicilia, has been reigning on her kingdom, waiting for her two twin children (her son Tamase and daughter Lisea) to be old enough to take on. Sadly enough, Tamase is obliged to head with his friend Barzane (also Lisea’s secret fiancée) to defend their kingdom at the limit of its borders. They are welcomed by the King of Ponto and both fall in love with his daughter Arsilda. She chooses Tamase and Barzane, heartbroken, decides to take revenge on his friend. On their way back, the ship of Tamase sinks. His mother, convinced he is now dead, forces her daughter Lisea to pretend to be Tamase, her dead brother, so she can reign (only men are permitted to do so).

Act I opens on Lisea, disguised as her brother Tamase. She announces her future wedding with Arsilda. Cisardo warns all, that an enemy has entered the town and attempts to capture Arsilda. It is Barzane who has learnt of Tamase’s return. In the next scene, Lisea, in disguise, refuses, in private, to marry Arsilda much to her sadness. Lisea confides in her friend Mirinda and laments on the cruelty of her situation. Mirinda explains she has decided to renounce love in her aria: Io son quel gelsomino.
