Biography Gluck Christoph Willibald
Christoph Willibald von Gluck was born in Bavaria in 1714 and died in Vienna in 1787. The German composer had also Italian and French styles of opera. After digesting all popular styles, Gluck laid the foundations of modern opera in Orfeo ed Euridice: refusal of pure virtuosity in favor of the subject and the orchestral color. He traveled throughout Europe: Vienna, Milan, London. Arriving in Paris in 1774 Gluck presented the French versions of Orfeo and Alceste. He returned to Vienna in 1779.
