Presentation

Gebt mir meinen Jesum wieder set by Picander was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1727 (G Major). This aria is the fifty-first number of the second part of the St Matthiew Passion.

In 1724, when J.S. Bach was appointed to Saint Thomas Church in Leipzig, he was told by the city council of the time, he would not be permitted to compose any theatrical music. He respected those demands and never staged any of his cantatas, including his Saint Matthew’s Passion, performed for the first time at Saint Thomas Church in Leipzig, in 1727.
Nevertheless, Bach still wrote an immensely theatrical and dramatic Passion where drama and music are closely intertwined. Saint Matthew’s Passion is with no doubt one his most monumental and remarkable compositions owning to the length of the text but also to the ambitious orchestration: no less than four soloists, a large orchestra of strings, flutes, oboes, a harpsichord, an organ and two choirs join to narrate the last hours of Christ before crucifixion.
As, in his earlier Saint John passion, Bach structures his piece around the gospel recited by the Evangelist (the tenor) and the words, emotions, voiced by others taking part in the most painful episode of Jesus Christ’s life, combining them all in recitatives, arias and chorus numbers.

Gebt mir meinen Jesum wieder is the fifty-first number of Saint Matthew’s Passion. In the previous numbers, Judas has betrayed Jesus and given him in to the authorities against a pecuniary reward. As Jesus is sentenced to death, Judas is filled with remorse and tries to give back the money he has received for his betrayal (Des Morgens aber hielten alle Hohenpriester). His gesture is refused and Judas, in a state a great despair, hangs himself at the temple. Two members of that same temple then, refuse to keep the money (Und er warf die Silberlinge in den Tempel) and the reasons behind their decision are developed in our aria, Gebt mir Jesum wieder.
The aria is orchestrated for an ensemble of strings (viola, two violins), basso continuo, solo violin. The solo violin plays an important part in this aria, at times supporting the voice, at others creating a harmonious dialog between the vocal line and its melody. The fast and lifted tempo must not overshadow the sadness of the words and the tragedy that has just taken place.
