Presentation

Frühlingsnacht, a setting by Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorf , was composed by Robert Schumann in 1840. It is the twelfth lied of his song cycle, Liederkreis.

1840 is also known as Schumann’s year of song, the year where he wrote no less than three major song cycles, Frauenliebe und Leben but also Liederkreis and Dichterliebe. It is also known to be the year where he was finally able to marry Clara, the love of his life, after an endless legal battle to overcome the opposition of her father to their marriage.
Liederkreis, Op. 39, also called Eichendorff Liederkreis is to be distinguished of Liederkreis, Op.24, another song cycle composed the same year by Schumann on Heine’s poetry. In Liederkreis, Op. 39, Schumann choses to set 12 poems by Joseph Freiherr von Eichendorff, all selected from the poet’s book ‘Intermezzo’. Schumann describes his song cycle in a letter to Clara as “my most romantic music ever, with much of you in it, dearest Clara’. And indeed, solitude, nocturnal mystery, longed-for memories and painful emotions closely intertwine to create an intensely romantic scenery.

Frühlingsnacht is the twelfth and final lied of Liederkreis. A few words about the songs that precede it: In, In der Fremde (N.1), the narrator is filled with solitude and loneliness while in Intermezzo (N.2), he passionately declares his love. In Waldesgespräch (N.3), he meets die Lorelei and gets trapped forever in the woods. Die Stille (N.4) is a delicate love confession followed by a magical nocturne, Mondnacht (N.5) and Schöne Fremde (N.6), a song full of joy in the mist of the night. In auf einer Burg (N.7), the cycle shifts to a more gloomy and mysterious atmosphere as a bride is weeping. In, In der Fremde (N.8), the poet’s beloved is now dead and he is alone, in the woods, once again; no one seems to understand how much he suffers (Wehmut, N.9), all is deceitfulness and deception (Zwielicht, N.10). Im Walde (N.11) opens more joyfully on a wedding party. However, the poet is quickly caught up by his fears and all happiness fades.

Frühlingsnacht ends the song cycle on a blast of bliss and pleasure. As Spring is there, all the music seems to pour towards the triumphant final ‘sie ist Dein!’ (she is yours). The piano accompaniment, rich and virtuosic, lifts the spirits of the whole piece to yet another level with its beautiful evanescent countermelody (bar 10). Everything resonates and trembles with delight and glorious joy.
