Fairest Isle, a setting by John Dryden, is an aria composed by Henry Purcell in F major in 1791. This aria is part of Act V of Purcell’s opera, King Arthur.

When Purcell wrote his opera, King Arthur, in 1792 aged 33, he is already acknowledged as an important English composer. His semi-opera (alternation between spoken text and musical parts) met great success and the aria Fairest Isles was, so to speak, an operatic hit of the time.

In act I, the Britons are preparing to fight for the Christian King Arthur against Oswald the Saxon. We learn the reasons of their quarrel: Oswald had tried to marry Emmeline who rejected him for Arthur. Emmeline is blind so Arthur tries to explain to her what seeing means. In the next scene, Osmond, a saxon magician, tells Oswald that Philidel, one of his spirits, has refused to hurt the Christian soldiers. Oswald decides he will be punished later and a sacrifice of six men is performed to help the victory of the Saxons. In Scene 3, the Saxons are defeated.

In Act 2, Philidel repents and joins King Arthur. In the next scene, Oswald succeeds to kidnap Emmeline and her maid Matilda. In Scene 4 Arthur tries to negotiate with Oswald the return of Emmeline against some land but Oswald refuses.
Act 3 opens on Arthur trying to rescue Emmeline with the help of Merlin and Philidel. He succeeds in finding a vial that can cure her from her blindness. However, he will not be able to free her before the enchanted woods are destroyed. Osmond decides to try and seduce Emmeline but fails. He decides to force her but he is interrupted and has to leave to rescue Grimbald.
In Act IV, Arthur arrives at the enchanted woods and battles seductive spells. He succeeds and destroys the forest.
Act V opens on Osmond convincing Oswald to fight again against Arthur. Oswald challenges Arthur to a single combat and is defeated once more. Arthur spare him but forces him to return to Germany. The opera ends on a celebration of his reunion with Emmeline and all acclaim Britannia. The aria Fairest Isles sung by Venus, arises in the middle of all this excitement to praise love with elegance and dignity.
