Presentation

Depuis le jour, a setting by Saint-Pol Roux, was composed by Gustave Charpentier in 1893 (G Major) and premiered in 1900. This aria is part of Act III of his opera, Louise.

If Charpentier finished writing his opera Louise in 1893, it was premiered only in 1900. Many opera directors had previously refused to have it staged as its portrayal of parental disobedience and feminine desire was considered too immoral. Charpentier, aged 28, started composing Louise during his stay at the villa Medicis (he had won the prestigious composition prize in 1887). His opera is clearly an example of French verismo. Interestingly, the city of Paris seems to be the most important character of the opera. He portrays it as a symbol of freedom, hapiness and festivities.

Act I opens on Louise and Julien, two neighbors who have fallen in love and remember the day they met. Louise’s mother disapproves of their romance. Louise’s father comes back from work extenuated and they all beg for him to rest and leave his job. During dinner, he reads out loud a letter Julien wrote, asking to marry Louise. Louise’s mother is infuriated and slaps Louise in the face. When Louise, later in the evening, reads out the paper to her father, she starts crying.

In Act II, Julien, with some of his bohemian friends, shows up at Louise’s work. He has decided to bypass Louise’s parent’s consent and take off with her. Louise arrives with her mother that always accompanies her to work. When her mother is gone, Julien appears again. Louise tells him she loves him, but loves her parents also. She finally agrees to leave with him and discreetly disappears in the middle of her day of work.

At the opening of act III, Louise expresses her delight after moving in with Julien in her aria: Depuis le jour.
