Presentation

Chinoierie, a setting by Théophile Gautier, was composed by Manuel de Falla in 1909 and published in 1910. It is the second song of his song cycle, trois Mélodies.

In 1910, year where Falla’s 3 mélodies were published, the Spanish composer had been in living in Paris for three years. He had become acquainted with many eminent French musicians of the time, among which Stravinsky, Ravel and Debussy (the third melody of the cycle is dedicated to Mme Debussy). The cycle is united through the poems of one and unique author, Theophile Gautier, a distinguished poet of the French, literary Parnasse movement.

Chinoiserie is the second mélodie of his song cycle, 3 Mélodies. It sets a poem centered around the figure of a beautiful Chinese woman. Demarquez liked to say De Falla had found his inspiration in the frequent visits he made to the Guimet museum in Paris, the “Oriental museum”. Indeed, this melody is typical of a French artistic movement, called orientalism, that found it’s unity in the depiction of a fantasized vision of Middle Eastern, South and East Asian culture. Manuel de Falla uses typical modal scales to recall China at the start of the song. He, then, delicately intertwines high pitched octaves and fifths that create a uniform pattern at the piano, varying the rhythm motifs and generating a gracious disorder.
