Presentation

Chanson triste, a setting by Jean Lahor, was composed by Henri Duparc in 1868 and published the year after. It is the fourth song of his op.2, cinq mélodies.

In 1868, Duparc, aged only twenty years old, composed Chanson triste and 4 other melodies all part of his op.2. Student of Cesar Frank, he focused on linking ever more closely melody and words. Victim at a young age of a mental illness, he would cease composing at 40 years old in 1885, destroying most of his works.
Within these five melodies, some are strongly influenced by composers such as Berlioz (Le galop) or Saint-Saëns (Sérénade or Romance de Mignon). Soupir and Chanson triste, however, already seem deeply original and impregnated with Duparc’s style.

In Chanson triste, the accompaniment through wavy arpeggios and arching harmonies leads us into a veiled, magical moonlight. The vocal line seems caressing, as if embracing the emotions radiating from the beloved’s heart, a mix of hope, bliss and tenderness. This passionate vision does not completely overshadow the darkness and suffering the narrator is hoping to escape and the song ends on an open question: will he be cured? The answer lies within each performer’s interpretation.
