Presentation

Cara sposa , a setting by Giacomo Rossi, was composed by George Frideric Händel in 1711 and premiered the same year. This aria takes place in Act I of Rinaldo.

In 1711, Handel, aged 31, is already a renowned composer. Born in Halle (today situated in Germany), he spent, in his mid-twenties, several years in Italy, learning how to master Italian opera. After the tremendous success of his opera Agrippina in Venice, the Elector of Hannover, Prince Georg Ludwig, future King Georg I of Great Britain (he would be crowned four years later) appointed Handel Kapellmeister in 1710. In 1711, Handel went to London for the first time and was commissioned his first opera by the Queen’s Theater in Haymarket: Rinaldo. It will meet fabulous success and be one of the reasons of Handel’s future definite stay in England.
Cara sposa is sung by Rinaldo towards the end of Act I. The Christians are laying siege to Jerusalem under the direction of Goffredo, father of Almirena. He promises Almirena’s hand to Rinaldo if he manages to conquer Jerusalem. A three-day truce is accepted, time where Argante, king of Jerusalem, hopes to deter Rinaldo from conquering the city. He asks for the help of his lover Armida, queen of Damas and great magician.
As Rinaldo and Almirena are exchanging sweet promises, Armida arrives and magically captures Rinaldo’s beloved. He is left alone to express his distress and despair in his aria: Cara sposa, amante cara.
