Presentation

Bella siccome un angelo , a setting by Giovanni Ruffini , was composed by Gaetano Donizetti in 1842 (Cb Major) and premiered in january 1943. This aria takes place in act I of the opera Don Pasquale.

Donizetti was commissioned to write a new opera buffa for the Théâtre-Italien in Paris while working for the same theater at the rehearsals of his opera, Lindi di Chamonix. The creation of Don Pasquale didn’t go smoothly. The librettist Ruffini, was so furious with all the alterings Donizetti and the singers were asking for, that he left and refused to have his name associated with the opera. The rehearsals went poorly as the orchestra detested the music. However, it was an immediate popular success and the opera remains probably Donizetti’s most famous one, despite the harsh critics written at the time.
The opera opens on Don Pasquale, an old man in his seventies, fuming at the thought of his nephew refusing the bride he had chosen for him. Ernesto is in love with a young, but poor widow, Norina and will only accept to marry her. Don Pasquale has decided to disinherit his nephew and to marry so to produce a new heir. He has asked his friend Dr Malatesta, also his physician, to help him find a bride and awaits his arrival with impatience.
Dr Malatesta arrives and has decided to play a trick and teach Don Pasquale a lesson. He tells Don Pasquale he has found him the perfect bride, his sister Sofronia, who is reality will be Norina. He describes his “sister” as shy and well brought up, perfect and beautiful in his aria: Bella siccome un angelo.
