Range Ave Maria

Ave Maria was composed by Charles Gounod in 1859 (G major) and published the same year.

There could not be a more familiar wedding standard than Gounod’s Ave Maria. He composed a first version of it in 1853, during an evening with friends. He improvised a melody over the harmonies of the first prelude of S. Bach that his father-in-law transcribed and published, in an arrangement for violin and cello. It was immediately successful and the income helped Gounod and his newlywed wife settle down. Years after, in 1859, Gounod fell in love with a young woman named Rosalie. He decided to set a poem to this melody and offer it as a gift to her. However, Rosalie’s mother considered the gift unappropriated and suggested he set the Ave Maria prayer to the music instead. Gounod followed her advice and the least devotional Ave Maria ever written was to become a huge hit!

If his melody follows extremely closely Bach’s prelude it includes the Schwencke measure (bar. 23), possibly added by Christian Friedrich Schwencke to correct a “faulty progression” in Bach’s prelude.
