Range Adieu notre petite table

Adieu notre petite table , a setting by Henri Meilhac, was composed by Jules Massenet in 1984 (Eb Major) and published the same year. This aria takes part in act III of his opera Manon.

Adieu notre petite table is probably the most famous aria written by Massenet in the non-less famous of his operas, Manon.
The libretto is based on L’Histoire du chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, written by Abbé Prevost and published in 1731. The novel will be banned two times as its content was considered scandalous and immoral at the time. In 1754, after toning down some scandalous details and adding moralizing disclaimers, the author will publish it again and it will become one of the most popular novels of its time. It was used during the beginning of the 19th century to teach young girls what bad example they should avoid following and what would become of them, if they did.
The opera opens on an Inn in Amien where, Guillot and Brétigny, accompanied by three women are dining. Lescaut and his friends arrive and he explains he is awaiting the arrival of his cousin, Manon, he has to escort to the convent. As she arrives, he leave to take care of her luggage. Manon, during that time, meets Guillot and Brétigny and they promise to fulfill her every desire if she follows them. Lescaut decides to join his friends to play cards and leaves Manon alone again. As Manon is dreaming, the young Chevalier des Grieux arrives and it is love at first sight. They run away together for Paris.
The act II is set in a small Parisian room where Manon and des Grieux live happily together. Des Grieux is finishing a letter for his father where he asks for permission to marry Manon. Lescaut and Bretigny enter and tell Manon the father of Des Grieux is about to abduct his son to stop him from marrying her. In exchange for her silence, Brétigny offers her luxury and protection. As Des Grieux leaves to post his letter, Manon, alone reflects on the best decision to take and with regret decides to abandon Des Grieux and follow Brétigny.
