Presentation

Adieu , a setting by Charles Jean Grandmougin, was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1878 and published in 1880. It is the third and last song of his op.23, Poème d’un jour.

Fauré wrote his op. 21, poème d’un jour during a difficult period of his life: his engagement to Marianne Viardot had been broken off in November 1878 much to his despair and he was also suffering to see his music unvalued and unappreciated. Op.21 narrates a short-lived love story, from romantic idealization to cold indifference. It is difficult to not notice how, the poems written by Charles Jean Grandmougin, seem in resonance with Fauré’s personal life experience of the time.
The first piece of the cycle, Rencontre, describes the moment of rapture when to lover meet for the first time. It is followed by Toujours, which expresses in the most passionate outburst of emotions, the impossibility for a lover to forget and ignore his pain when the love story has come to an end.
Adieu sets a text of Charles Jean Grandmougin which cruelly expresses how feelings of love don’t last and how the time for farewells has come. The piano cords, from the start, seem to figure this careless dispassion with mechanical crotchet cords moving up and down the scale. In the last stanza, the syncopation at the right hand accentuates this feeling. The melody at the vocal line seems likewise somehow disengaged, though with a tat of melancholy and, perhaps, regret?
