Range Ach, ich liebte

Ach, ich liebte! , a setting by Christoph Friedrich Bretzner and Gottlieb Stephanie, was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1781 (Bb Major) and premiered in 1782. This aria takes place in act I of his opera, Die Entführung aus dem Serail.

Mozart arrived at Vienna aged 25 where he met Gottlieb Stephanie, the inspector of the Nationalsingspiel. Impressed with his earlier compositions, Gottlieb Stephanie proposed to write Mozart a libretto. They collaborated closely on the writing of Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Mozart was very happy to find his librettist sensitive to his ideas and ready to rewrite parts of the libretto when needed. It was later said that Gottlieb Stephanie had only altered the previous work of another librettist Christoph Friedrich Bretzner without seeking his permission, which was made into a scandal.
The opera sets the attempt of the hero Belmonte, assisted by his servant Pedrillo, to rescue his beloved Konstanze from the Serail of Pasha Bassa Selim.
Act I opens on Belmonte looking for his beloved Konstanze, who was been captured, as well as her servant Blonde by pirates and sold to the pasha Selim. He questions Osmin, a servant of the pasha without success and, after being insulted, leaves in disgust. Pedrillo, the faithful servant of Belmonte, who has also been captured by the Pasha enters and Osmin insults him too. As Osmin leaves, Belmonte enters again and reunites happily with Pedrillo, his servant. They decide to rescue Konstanze together.
Accompanied by a chorus, Pasha Selim and Konstanze come in. Pasha Selim expresses his love from Konstanze but she rejects him and sings of how much she loved and still loves her betrothed, Belmonte in her aria, “Ach, ich liebte, war so glücklich”.
