Presentation

Absence, a setting by Theophile Gautier, was composed by Hector Berlioz in 1838 (F# Major). It is the fourth song of his song cycle, Les nuits d’été.

Absence is part of Les nuits d’été, a song cycle Berlioz first wrote for piano and mezzo-soprano or tenor. He, later, in 1856, orchestrated this song cycle and gave each song to a different voice. Today, it is often sang by one and only singer throughout.
In 1841, year where the cycle was first composed, Berlioz was going through delusion and disappointment. His marriage with Harriet Smithson had revealed itself a complete failure and he was left torn between remembering the happy memories of him with Harriet and the certainty that all love among him and his wife was now dead. He would also, this same year, fall in love again and start an adulterous relation with Maria Recio. All those torments may have prompted him to write Les nuits d’été, where each song is infused with Romantic love.

Absence is the third melody of the song cycle. The text by Théophile Gautier, calling for the return of the loved one is set on a plaintive, expressively withheld melody. The harmonies are quite unusual, with the E sharp of the F# Major tonality, creating a delicious, yet painful dissonance on the refrain of the song. Berlioz may have reused the music of an abandoned cantata, Erigone to compose this melody, structuring it around an “ABA” lied musical form.
