Range Vieni! T'affretta!

Vieni! T’affretta!, a setting by Francesco Maria Piave, was composed by Guiseppe Verdi in 1847 (E Major) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of Act I of his opera, Macbeth.

When Macbeth is premiered in 1847, Verdi has not yet reached international fame but is already a recognized composer. Macbeth will be the first of the three operas Verdi wrote based on a play by Shakespeare (Othello, Falstaff being the other two). Verdi chose the play after securing the availability of Felice Varesi, a famous baritone of the time, Verdi wanted to work with. If the first version of Macbeth in 1847 met remarkable success, it would not be the case of his French adaption of the Shakespearean play in 1865 which is rarely performed nowadays.

Act I opens on the encounter of Macbeth and Banco with witches next to a battlefield. The witches predict Macbeth will be King and that Banco’s descendance will too. As the witches disappear, Macbeth is told that he is now Thrane of Cawdor as the holder of the title is now dead. Macbeth contemplates how close he is now from the throne and wonders if he will reach it without taking action or if he will need to betray. In Scene 2, Lady Macbeth is reading the letter of her husband narrating his encounter with witches. She decides to help her husband rise to the throne by any means in her aria: Vieni! T’affretta!
