Range S'altro che lacrime

S’altro che lacrime, a setting by Caterino Mazzolà, was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1791 (Bb Major) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of Act II of his opera, La Clemenza di Tito.

Mozart was still composing die Zauberflöte, when he was asked by the impressario Domenico Guardasoni, in great haste, to compose La Clemenza di Tito. It was commissioned for the coronation of Leopold the second as King of Bohemia. Leopold II was adamant on trying to pacify Bohemia and responding to the uprising temptations in his Kingdom, aftermaths of the French Revolution of 1789. He wanted to be pictured as a magnanimous and judicious emperor while promoting the conservative social division between an aristocracy elite and the rest of his people. La Clemenza di Tito was tailed to suit this political agenda which is a first in Mozart’s biography. Sadly enough, Mozart died a few months after the first representation of his opera.

In the first act Vitellia, in love with the emperor Titus, is told he is about to marry Berenice. Enraged, she convinces Sesto, in love with her and very close to the emperor, to conspire against him. Annius, in love with the sister of Sesto, Servilia, enters and lets them know the emperor has changed his mind and has decided to marry Servilia instead. Servilia begs the emperor to let her marry the man she loves Annius and Titus, moved by her tears, accepts. He decides to marry Vitellia but unaware of his decision, she leads Sextus in setting the Capitol on fire. Luckily Titus manages to escape.

Act II opens on Annio telling Sesto the emperor is alive. As Sesto wants to flee he is convinced not to by Annio. Sesto is soon arrested and trialed by the Senate. Tito awaits the Senate’s decision, sure his friend will be exonerated. In the meantime, Annio begs Tito to show clemency. They soon learn Sesto has been sentenced to death and Tito must now sign the execution order. The emperor, unable to do so, decides to go speak to Sesto first. He listens to Sesto taking on all the responsibility of the conspiracy (though he is unware this is to protect Vitellia). Sesto asks to be sent to death however, Tito after an internal struggle decides to show mercy. Vittellia is, on her side, full of guilt and Servilia warns her in her aria, S’altro che lacrime, she needs to act instead of crying so she can save Sesto.
