Presentation

Regnava nel silenzio… Quando rapito in estasi, a setting by Salvadore Cammarano, was composed by Gaetano Donizetti (D Major) and premiered in 1835. This aria takes place in act I of his opera, Lucia di Lammermoor.

Premiered in 1835, Lucia Lammermoor was instrumental in furthering Donizetti’s reputation and fame as a composer. At the time of the premiere, Rossini had retired a few years earlier and Bellini had died the year before. All was in place for Donizetti to start being considered, the most talented composer of his time. It is still, nowadays, one of the most performed operas, worldwide. The libretto written by Salvadore Cammarano, was inspired by a novel by Sir Walter Scott, The Bride of Lammermoor. It sets the opera in Scotland, around the end of the sixteenth century, during the Scottish religious wars. In this context, a powerful family, the Ashtons, has taken possession of the castle of the Ravenswoods, a rival family.

Act I opens on Enrico Ashton, anxious to see his family so close to bankruptcy. He knows the only way to save the situation is for Lucia, his sister, to marry Lord Arturo. She refuses as she loves Edgardo di Ravenswood, a rival and enemy of Enrico. He intends to force this love affair to an end.
Meanwhile, Lucia is waiting for her beloved, Edgardo. She describes to her maid, Alisa a dark vision she has had and longs for Edgardo in her aria: Regnava nel silenzio… Quando rapito in estasi.
