Presentation

Ombre légère, a setting by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré was composed by Giacomo Meyerbeer and premiered in 1859. This aria takes place in Act II of his opera, Dinorah.

If Meyerbeer’s works have been mostly forgotten nowadays, he was, nonetheless, one of the most considered French composers of his time. Composed in 1859, Dinorah (or Le pardon de Ploërmel) was hugely successful, mostly because of the impressive virtuosic part of the main character of the opera, Dinorah. The only part of the opera to still be performed today is Ombre légère, an aria sung by Dinorah in act II.

Act I opens on a young girl, Dinorah, who was been abandoned at the altar the previous year by her fiancé, Hoël. She has become delirious with pain but nevertheless, continues to search for her beloved everywhere. She enters Corentin’s house and rests for a bit. Meanwhile, Hoël comes back to the village after having discovered a legend leading to a treasure. He tells Corentin about it, as he needs him to be the first to touch it: the legend specifies the first to touch the treasure will die. Hoël explains he decided to go after the tresor, when he discovered his house had been destroyed during his marriage by a violent storm. He preferred to abandon his bride rather than force her into misery.

In Act II, Dinorah enters seeking for her beloved Hoël. She starts dancing with her shadow in the moonlight singing her famous aria: Ombre légère.
