Range Oh mio Fernando!

Oh mio Fernando! , a setting by Alphonse Royer et Gustave Vaëz, was composed by Gaetano Donizetti in 1840 (A minor). This aria takes place in act III of the opera La Favorita.

This aria is part of La Favorita, an opera Donizetti wrote based on a French libretto inspired by a play, Le comte de Comminges by Baculard d’Arnaud. The opera was written to suit Rosine Stoltz, the mistress of the Paris opera director of the time Léon Pillet. She premiered the role in 1840.

The opera opens on a monastery were monks are preparing to worship God. Fernando appears and explains to Superior Balthazar he has fallen in love with a mysterious lady and wants to leave the monastery to find her. Superior Balthazar accepts with resent and warns him he will be hurt and disappointed.
Fernando finds that mysterious lady, Leonora and confesses his love. She returns it but lets him know they can never meet again and can never marry without explaining the reasons. Nevertheless, she hands him a document, a commission in the army, and Fernando heads to the war.

As the second act opens, the King is praising Fernando’s bravery. Alone, he expressed his love to his mistress, Leonora and desires to divorce the Queen to marry her. However, he knows that would provoke the opposition of Balthazar, his father in law backed by the Pope. Gaspard enters, letting him know he has discovered his beloved mistress, Leonora, has another lover.
Act III opens on the king and Fernando. The king wants to thank Fernando for his loyalty and asks him what would make him happy. As Fernando asks to marry Leonora, he understands he is the mysterious man Leonora loves. He orders them to be married within an hour and Leonora is left happy but also despaired by the thought Fernando doesn’t know she was the King’s mistress and the dishonor it will mean for him.
