Oh mio babbino caro , a setting by Giovacchino Forzano , was composed by Giacomo Puccini in 1918 (Ab Major) and published the same year. It is part of the third and final opera of Puccini’s Il trittico (The Triptych).

Oh mio babbino caro is one of the most famous aria of Puccini’s opera. Puccini wrote a set of three operas called Il trittico (The Triptych), of one act each, first premiered at the Metropolitan Opera, in 1918 (Il tabarro, Suor Angelina and Gianni Schicchi). If originally he intended them to all be inspired from Dante’s Divine comedy, eventually, Gianni Schicchi, is the only opera based on Dante’s work.

Our opera is based in Florence in 1299. As Buoso Donati lies dead, his relatives gather around him worrying about the content of his will. It has been rumored, all his fortune has been donated to a monastery so they frantically search for the will. Rinuccio decides to ask his aunt if he can marry Lauretta, a newcomer in Florence, living with her father Gianni Schicchi. She accepts, on the condition Buoso has left him a lot of money. As Rinuccio happily asks little Gherardino to fetch Lauretta and her father, the will is finally displayed and the worst fears of the family are confirmed: everything has been donated to a monastery. As Rinuccio proposes to ask Gianni Schicchi for advice, the family turns him down arguing his humble origins are unacceptable and no marriage can now be considered between the two families much to Rinuccio’s despair. Lauretta and her father arrive and Gianni quickly understands what has happened. Summoned to leave by the family members, Lauretta begs him to take a look at the will as she loves Rinuccio passionately and sings: Oh mio babbino caro (Oh my dear father).
