Presentation

Mondnacht, a setting by John Henry Mackay, was composed by Richard Strauss in 1894 and published in 1897. It is the fourth and final lied of his song cycle, Vier lieder, op. 27.

Richard Strauss, wrote his song cycle op.27 in his early thirties, the same year he married the soprano Pauline de Ahna. Although she was known to be ill-tempered (Strauss described her as “very complex, very feminine, a little perverse, a little coquettish, never like herself, at every minute different from how she had been a moment before”) it seems to have been a long and happy marriage. He intended the song cycle and more specifically the fourth and final song Morgen! as a celebration of the love he felt for his wife.

Morgen! sets a poem by the German poet John Henry Morgan where calming images of nature are associated with the powerful expression of love. The melody, at the vocal line, is remarkable for its gentle flow, undisturbed by the ascending melodic movements that succeed in capturing the profoundness of the emotions voiced by the poet. The gentle harmonies at the piano part beautifully support this depiction of immense love.
