Presentation

L’hiver a cessé, a setting by Paul Verlaine , was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1894 and published the same year. It is the ninth and final song of his song cycle, La Bonne Chanson.

Fauré chose in this song cycle, to set 9 poems by Verlaine, all part of his fourth poetry volume, La Bonne chanson. In this ensemble of poems, Verlaine recalls specific moments in his life, from meeting Malthide Mauté, to them marrying.
La Bonne chanson by Fauré, published in 1894, was composed during his stay in Bougival, where he was the guest of the banker Sigismond Bardac and his wife, Emma Bardac (soprano). Fauré made no mystery of with feelings for Emma (she will later be the second wife of Debussy) and the song cycle is dedicated to her. The song cycle was composed song after song, as Fauré recalls, in a very spontaneous way, Emma, trying out each day the newly composed music.

L’hiver a cessé is the ninth and final song of la Bonne Chanson. It follows, Une Sainte en son auréole, where the loved one is described as a saint with her halo (N.1). and Puisque l’aube grandit, a beautiful declaration of love (N.2). In La Lune blanche luit dans les bois (N.3), the poet uses landscape as a metaphor for his feelings and in J’allais par des chemins perfides (N.4), he recalls how previous torments were overcome thanks to love. The poet realizes in J’ai presque peur en vérité (N.5), how fragile and vulnerable his love has made him and enjoys waking up next to her in the morning (Avant que tu t’en ailles, N.6). He rejoices at the thought of his forthcoming marriage (Donc, ce sera par un clair jour d’été, N.7) and asks his beloved a last time, if she agrees that they are making the right choice (N’est-ce pas?, N.8).

L’hiver a cessé ends the cycle on a virtuosic moment of brilliance and thrill. The piano accompaniment resembles a growing chorus of voice as Spring emerges from Winter. Every living thing seems to be reborn and all join in an explosion of light and joy. The voice enters the song, as if surfing on a wave of sound and sails through towards the last sentence of the poem: an intense, fervent, yet contained, expression of gratitude for his beloved.
