Range La chevelure

La chevelure, a setting by Pierre Louÿs, was composed by Claude Debussy in 1897 and published in 1899. It is the second song of his song cycle, Trois chansons de Bilitis.

In 1897, Debussy chose to set a few famous erotic poems by Pierre Louÿs, a friend of his. Those poems were all selected from Les Chansons de Bilitis, a collection of poems Pierre Louÿs would have translated from Ancient Greek. In really, Bilitis, the poetess contemporary of Sapho was a fictional character invented by Pierre Louÿs who wrote every poem himself.
Debussy, as many of his contemporaries, was very sensitive to reminiscences of Antique Greece and many of his compositions relate to some hedonistic, pagan philosophy (see l’Après-midi d’un faune). He would, later, remodel his song cycle for a small orchestra in 1900.

La chevelure is the second song of Trois chansons de Bilitis. It follows La flute de Pan (N.1) a tender, pastoral invocation. La chevelure is set in a calm, declamatory style. The piano introduces the song with slow percussive cords on which the voice declaims an erotic text. All the sensuality seems to arise from the languorous harmonies and the undulating, expressive melody of the vocal part. The lower register in which the voice is mostly set, accentuates the erotic charm of the words.
