Range In quelle trine morbide

In quelle trine morbide, a setting by five different librettists , was composed by Giacomo Puccini between 1890 and 1893 (Eb Major) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of Act II of his opera, Manon Lescaut.

Premiered in 1893, Manon Lescaut, written by Puccini aged 35 at the time, was his first international success. The libretto was based on a novel written by Abbé Prevost L’Histoire du chevalier Des Grieux et de Manon Lescaut, the same novel on which was based the opera composed by Massenet, Manon, a few years earlier. At the time of its publication, two bans were issued against the novel, as its content was considered scandalous and immoral. In 1754, after toning down some scandalous details and adding moralizing disclaimers, the author had it published again. It will live to become one of the most popular novels of its time. It was used during the beginning of the 19th century to teach young girls what bad example they should avoid following and what would become of them, if they did. The libretto was written by no less than five different librettists (Ruggero Leoncavallo, Marco Praga, Giuseppe Giacosa, Domenico Oliva and Luigi Illica). Puccini would later choose to continue collaborating with Illica and Giacosa from his next three most successful operas.

The opera opens on a public square in Amien where, Edmondo and students are joyfully singing. Des Grieux enters, filled with melancholy. A coach arrives and the passengers step down. Among the passengers, Geronte, an elderly treasurer-general and Lescaut, who is accompanying his sister, a beautiful young girl, Manon, to the convent. He asks her to wait for him while he heads to the inn. Left alone, she meets Des Grieux and he confesses he has fallen in love with her. Lescaut asks Manon to join him, but before, she accepts to meet Des Grieux again. Everyone considers it would be a waist to send such a beauty to a convent. They convince Lescaut to stop and play some card games. Meanwhile, Geronte, plans on abducting Manon. Edmondo warns Des Grieux of Geronte’s plans and when he meets Manon again, he convinces her to escape with him to Paris. Geronte realizes he has been tricked but the two lovers are already gone.

The act II opens on a room where Manon, who is now Geronte’s mistress, is residing. When her brother Lescaut enters, she tells him she is bored with Geronte who is too old and uninteresting. She remembers Des Grieux and longs for his arms in her aria: In quelle trine morbide.
