Range Il mio tesoro

Il mio tesoro, a setting by Lorenzo Da Ponte , was composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1787 (Bb Major) and premiered in October of the same year. This aria is part of Act II of the opera, Don Giovanni.

After the huge success Le Noze di Figaro met in Prague in 1786, Mozart was commissioned by an impresario in Prague to write another opera the next year. He asked Da Ponte to write him a new libretto and their second collaboration gave birth to Don Giovanni (complete title: Il dissoluto punito, ossia il Don Giovanni), an opera buffa based on the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine.

Act I opens on Leporello guarding the house of Donna Anna at nighttime. Don Giovanni, his master has introduced himself in her house to seduce Donna Anna, daughter of il Commendatore (Don Pedro), engaged to Don Octavio. Suddenly Donna Anna appears with Don Giovanni and shouts for help. Her father answers her cries and forces Don Giovanni to fight him in duel. He is mortally hurt and Don Giovanni runs away without revealing his identity. Donna Anna is left in a state of desperation and Ottavio promises to take revenge.

In the next scene, Don Giovanni and Leporello meet Elvira, a woman Don Giovanni has already seduced and abandoned. Once he recognizes her, he leaves, asking Leporello to console her. Leoporello tells Elvira she is one of thousands, and Elvira promises she will get revenge.
The next scene opens on Masetto and Zerlina preparing for their wedding. Don Giovanni decides to seduce the pretty Zerlina but Elvira saves her. She meets Donna Anna and Ottavio and warns them against him. Dona Anna believes she has recognized him as the murderer of her father and Ottavio swears he will take revenge. Don Giovanni goes home joyfully unaware and asks Leporello to organize a party at his house and invite every girl he can find.

Don Giovanni invites Zerlina and Masetto to the ball while Leporello offers to Elvira, Ottavio and Anna he has not recognized to come also (they are wearing masks). Don Giovanni tries, once more to seduce Zerlina who cries out for help. As a crowd appears, Don Giovanni pretends it was Leporello that was seducing Zerlina. No one believes him but he managed to run away.
Act II opens on Leporello wanting to leave his master but Don Giovanni convinces him instead to exchange clothes with him. Elvira mistaking Leporello for Don Giovanni leaves with him and Don Giovanni starts to seduce her maid. He is interrupted by Masetto and a group of men he sends looking out for Don Giovanni (Leporello deguised in Don Giovanni). He manages to beat up Masetto and leaves. Zerlina comes to console Masetto.

As Elvira and Leporello are joined by Ottavio, Anna, Masetto and Zerlina, they all want to kill him except Elvira. Leporello reveals his real identity and implores forgiveness. He manages to escape. Ottavio seeing in this disguise the proof of Don Giovanni being the murderer of Donna Anna’s father, swears to take revenge in his aria Il mio tesoro intanto.
