Presentation

Fleur jetée, a setting by Armand Sylvestre , was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1884 (D minor) and published in 1885. It is the second song of his op. 52 song cycle.

Fleur jetée is the second of his opus 52. song cycle. It is one of the stormiest and theatrical songs Fauré has ever written (Toujours, a song he wrote a few years earlier, relates closely to Fleur jetée in terms of composition technic). It has often been compared to Schubert’s Erkönig because of its passionate romantic melodramatic ton, which is very unusual in Fauré’s compositions. The vocal line throughout the piece is bitterly intense, with each brief decrescendo raging back to powerful fortes. In this song, the influence of his teacher Camille Saint-Saëns is visible, with repetitive articulation and adherence to the tempo required from the pianist as well as operatic scales and intensity needed from the singer. The poem comes after Notre amour in Silvestre’s collection: Les ailes d’or which Fauré also set in 1879 in his opus 23.
