Presentation

Dove sei , a setting by Nicola Francesco Haym, was composed by George Frideric Händel in 1724 and premiered in 1725. This aria takes place in Act I of Rodelinda.

In 1725, year where Rosalinda was first premiered, Handel, aged 45 is an extremely famous composer in England. Born in Halle (today situated in Germany), he had spent, in his mid-twenties, several years in Italy, learning how to master Italian opera. He chose to settle in London around 1711 and since then, composed Italian operas for the English public, in great number: In 1724, year where Rosalinda was composed, Handel also wrote no less than Tamerlano and Gulio Cesare!

Dove sei is to be sung by Bertarido towards the end of Act I. The first act opens on Queen Rodelinda crying the loss of her husband Bertarido. He was defeated by Grimoaldo who, then, stole his throne. Grimoaldo enters and proposes to marry Rodelinda who rejects his offer with disgust. The sister of Rodelinda, Eduige whom Grimoaldo had often asked to marry, enters under shock. She sees his proposal to her sister as a betrayal and lets him know. As he leaves, Garibaldo, a count secretly in love with Eduige comes in and offers her the head of Grimoaldo. She refuses and leaves the room. Garibaldo, alone, swear he will succeed in taking the throne back for himself.
In the next scene, Bertarido, the legitimate king, everyone believes dead, sees his tomb and expresses his sadness in his aria: Dove sei, amato bene?
