Range Dopo l'oscuro nembo

Dopo l’oscuro nembo, a setting by Andrea Leone Tottola, was composed by Vincente Bellini in 1825 (F minor) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of Act I of his opera, Adelson e Salvini.

Adelson e Salvini is the first opera ever written by Bellini, aged 23. He wrote it to conclude his composition studies at the Naples San Sebastiano Conservatory in 1825. Performed by students of that music school every Sunday for a year, it captured the interest of Domenico Barbaja, who commissioned Bellini to write his first professionally staged Opera in 1826, Bianca e Gernando. In this early opera, Bellini’s ability to create a tuneful and delicate vocal line is already obvious. Bellini would re-use some of the musical material of Adelson e Salvini for later works (the music of the aria Dopo l’oscuro nembo sung by Nelly in the first act will later become the aria of Julietta, Oh quante volte in I Capuleti e i Montecchi).

Act I opens on Fanny, secretly in love with Salvini, her painting teacher. Salvini is staying at Lord’s Adelson’s home. So is Nelly, a young orphan, betrothed to his friend and host, Lord Adelson. Salvini struggles with his repressed feelings of love for Nelly. We soon meet Colonel Struley condemned by Adelson’s father to exile, a few years earlier. He happens to also be Nelly’s uncle. He plans on taking his revenge by stealing Nelly away from Aldelson. Meanwhile, Salvini is left torn between his love for Nelly and his friendship with Adelson. He contemplates suicide, but Bonifacio partly succeeds in comforting him.
In the next scene, we meet Nelly, awaiting the return of fiancée Adelson. She expresses her feelings and hopes in her aria: Dopo l’oscuro nembo.
