Range Der Schmied

Der Schmied, a setting by Johann Ludwig Uhland, was composed by Johannes Brahms in 1858-59. It is the fourth song of Fünf Gedichte, op. 19.

Der Schmied is the fourth lied of Brahms’ song cycle, Fünf Gechichte (op. 19). He composed it around 1859, during a period of his life where, still unknown as a composer, he was living in Hamburg. Thanks to Clara Schumann’s support he achieved in getting a small position as a musician at the court of Detmold that enabled him to compose. As often with Brahms’s, the unity of the song cycle is to be found in the music as the texts are quite assorted: Ludwig Uhland (N.2, N.3, N.4), a text by Ludwig Heinrich Christoph Hölty (N.1), and a beautiful poem written by Mörike (N.5). Brahms shows a very different approach to Schumann’s or Schubert’s song cycles where texts were all chosen among the same collection of poems. This song cycle of Brahms is the only named “Gedichte”, poem in German (and not Lieder or Gesänge), emphasizing the importance and the quality of the texts.

Der Schmied is the fourth lied of Brahms’ song cycle, Fünf Gechichte. It sets a poem by Ludwig Uhland, where a young woman describes her love, a village blacksmith. The swinging of his arm is figured by the quarter-crotchet rhythmical pattern at the right hand of the piano. The vocal line spread over one octave ( from G to G), in the most comfortable part of a sopranos voice , creating an impression of strength and consistency. All in this short, simple lied (no more than a minute long), transpires the protagonist’s admiration for the strength of her beloved.
