Range Der Gang

Der Gang, a setting by Josef Wenzig, was composed by Johannes Brahms in 1853-68 and published in 1898. It is the first song ofSieben Lieder, Op.48

Published in 1868, this song cycle seems to be centered around grief. At the time of the composition, Brahms had already settled in Vienna and been appointed conductor of the Vienna Singakademie. This furthered his interest in vocal music and many of his choir and melody works were composed from then on. The unity of the song cycle is to be found in the music as the texts are quite assorted: Josef Wenzig (N.1 and N.4), three German folk songs (N.2, N.3, N.6), a text by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and a poem by Adolf Friedrich von Schack. Brahms shows a very different approach to Schumann’s or Schubert’s song cycles where texts were all chosen among the same collection of poems.

Der Gang is the first lied of the song cycle. It sets a poem by Josef Wenzig describing a lover on his way to visit his dying beloved. The song seems a melancholic waltz. The accompaniment tunes to the vocal line fluidly, with, at the left hand, a deep bass at the beginning of each bar, followed by light cords on the remaining beats. The minor mode appears to color the text with profound grief, yet the dance-like quality of the song seems suspicious: is there some irony to be found behind this ostensible sadness?
