Presentation

Clair de lune , a setting by Paul Verlaine, was composed by Gabriel Fauré in 1887 and published in 1888. It is the second song of his op.46, deux Mélodies.

Fauré published his opus. 46 in 1887, a few years after marrying Marie Frémiet. Aged 42, he is left with little time to compose as he must earn a living for his young family (his wife and their two sons). The two songs have little in common as they are from different poets and relate to very different themes. Clair de lune was, from far, the most successful song of the two and it is still, nowadays, one of the most performed melodies by Fauré. It sets Clair de lune by Verlaine, a recollection of those poetical Fêtes Galantes of the 18th century, painted so delicately by Watteau. In these ideal landscapes, the piano details a timeless pastoral minuet. After a long prelude, an impassive vocal line enters delicately, to croons it all, occasionally agreeing with the accompaniment. As we reach “au calme clair de lune, triste et beau”, the piano part switches to arpeggios and the vocal line is made even more sustained and liquid, suggesting pure celestial beauty. As the cadenza reaches its point, the voice dies away and the piano concludes with grace and delicacy.
