Range Che Faro Senza Euridice

Che faro senza Euridice, a setting by Ranieri de’ Calzabigi, was composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck in 1762 (C Major) and premiered the same year. This aria is part of Act III of the opera, Orfeo ed Euridice.

Gluck composed his most successful opera, Orfeo ed Euridice in 1762, for the Burgtheater in Vienna. It was his first attempt to reform opera seria and lead Italian opera towards more simplicity, while incorporating some aspects of French opera such as accompanied recitatives.

Later, he would revise his opera to please the French audience in 1774, altering the vocal cast and suiting his music to the French language.

The opera is based on the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice. The first act opens on Orfeo lamenting the loss of his beloved Euridice. As he intends to suicide himself, Love tells him he can go to hell and get Euridice back if he succeeds in never looking back at her on their way back to the real world. Act II details Orfeo’s journey to hell where he finally is reunited with Euridice. Acte III opens on Orfeo and Euridice on their way back to earth. Euridice is worried to see her lover’s indifference (he can’t look back at her) and worries he doesn’t love her anymore. At her laments, he looks back and she expires in his arms. He expresses his desperation in his aria: Che faro senza Euridice (I have lost my Eurydice).
