Casta Diva, a setting by Felice Romani, was composed by Vincenzo Bellini and premiered in 1831 (F Major). This aria takes place in act I of his opera Norma.

Premiered in 1831, Bellini’s opera, Norma became more and more popular throughout the years. The libretto, written by Felice Romani was based on a tragedy by Alexandre Soumet, Norma ou l’infanticide. Richard Wagner considered it to be Bellini’s most successful composition, praising its action as pure and intense as a Greek tragedy and its ennobled characters, full of passion and majesty.

Act I opens on a procession of Druids led by Oroveso, praying for victory against the Romans. They count on Norma, the highest priestess to negotiate peace (they are unaware she has broken her vows and has had two children with Pollione, a Roman proconsul).

In the next scene, Pollione announces to Flavio, he no longer loves Norma and is now in love with the priestess Adalgisa. He tells him he has dreamt all this would lead to disaster.
Norma arrives, followed by all the Druids and Priestesses. She tells the crowd that time is not ripe for their revenge. She prays the moon for protection in her aria: Casta Diva.
