Range Bereite dich, Zion

Bereite dich, Zion , a setting by C. F. Henrici (Picander), was composed by Johann Sebastian Bach in 1734 (A minor). It is the piece number 4 in his Weihnachts-Oratorium.

Bach intended the Weihnachts-Oratorium to be performed in church during the Christmas season. As he often did, he incorporated in this oratorio many of his previous works, including several cantatas he composed the same year, some of which are now lost. If this Christmas oratorio is part of the group of the three oratorios Bach wrote for the major Christian feasts, the others being the Ascension Oratorio (BWV 11) and the Easter Oratorio (BWV 249), the Christmas Oratorio, is by far the most complex and long one.
The oratorio is in six separate parts, each narrating an important moment related to the birth of Jesus Christ. The first part (for Christmas Day) is focused on the Birth of Jesus, the second (for December 26) on the annunciation to the shepherds, the third (for December 27) on the adoration of the shepherds, the fourth (for New Year’s Day) on the circumcision and naming of Jesus, the fifth (for the first Sunday after New Year) on the journey of the Magi, and the sixth (for Epiphany) on the adoration of the Magi.
This aria takes place in the first part of the Christmas oratorio and announces the birth of Jesus Christ.
