Asturiana , a setting of a traditionnal Spanish song was composed by Manuel de Falla in 1914 and published in 1922. It is the third song of his song cycle, 7 Canciones populares españolas.

Written by Manuel de Falla in 1914, 7 Canciones populares españolas is not only his most famous work, it is probably also the most performed set of Spanish art songs.  He decided to publish them as he returned to Spain after seven years spent in Paris. At the outbreak of world war I, De Falla had just reached forty and was entering his mature creative period. Even if the source of inspiration for 7 Canciones populares españolas is to be found in authentic Spanish music, the songs bare the influence of his long stay in Paris: he dedicated this collection to Ida Godebska, host of regular Sunday gatherings, where Parisian artists would exchange and included a French translation of the songs, in the first edition of the song cycle. The musical styles in this set are strikingly diverse as they all reflect different folksong traditions from different parts of Spain:  El paño moruno (N.1) is a musical reminder of the Moorish influence in southern Spain while Seguidilla (N.2) is a type of flamenco from Muria southeast. Asturiana (N.3) echoes the music from Asturias in the North of Spain, Jota (N.4) the national Spanish dance and Nana, Andalusia (N.5). Cancion (N.6) is based on a famous Spanish tune and is the only song that can’t be associated with a specific Spanish region while Polo (N.7) is a tribute to Gyspy music.

Asturiana is the third song of 7 Canciones populares españolas. It is named after Asturias, a region situated in the far north, famous for its verdant landscape and mountains. It’s Celtic heritage is to be found in the use of bagpipes in place of guitars!
