Presentation

An die Nachtigall, a setting by Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty, was composed by Johannes Brahms around 1868 and published the same year. It is the fourth and final song of Vier Lieder, Op.46.

Published in 1868, this song cycle echoes opus 47 aesthetically with the settings of two poems by Georg Friedrich Daumer. At the time of the composition, Brahms had already settled in Vienna and been appointed conductor of the Vienna Singakademie before resigning a year later. This furthered his interest in vocal music and many of his choir and melody works were composed from then on. The unity of the song cycle is to be found in the music as the texts are quite assorted: two poems by Georg Friedrich Daumer and two by Ludwig Christoph Heinrich Hölty. Brahms shows a very different approach to Schumann’s or Schubert’s song cycles where texts were all chosen among the same collection of poems.

An die Nachtigall is the fourth and final lied of the song cycle. Brahms, in private, was quite unsecure about this song and only published it on the insistence of his friend Julius Stockhausen. The poem expresses how painful love can be and yet how Nature remains beautiful. The piano accompaniment is built around broken cords that alternate between the right and left hand. The vocal line is simple as are the harmonies, perhaps to reflect this unending Nature that we will outlast us all.
